
A photoelectric encoder is a high-precision electromechanical sensor that converts mechanical displacement, rotational speed and angular position into digital electrical pulses.
Its core assembly consists of a light source, a rotary code disk with evenly spaced slits, a fixed grating and photoelectric receivers.When coupled with a measured shaft, the code disk rotates synchronously. Light from the source is alternately transmitted and blocked by overlapping slits on the disk and fixed grating, producing intermittent light signals. These optical signals are then converted into pulse waveforms by photoelectric components.
The pulse count calculates angular or linear displacement; pulse frequency reflects rotational speed; the phase offset between two pulse channels identifies rotation direction.
