A photoelectric encoder is a precision electromechanical sensor that converts mechanical displacement, rotation speed and angular position into digital electrical signals.
Its core components include a light source, a rotating code disc with regularly arranged slits, a fixed slit plate, and photoelectric receiving elements.
When the shaft connected to the measured object rotates, the code disc spins synchronously. The light from the source alternately passes through and is blocked by the slits on the rotating disc and fixed plate. This generates a series of intermittent light signals. The photoelectric receiver converts these light signals into corresponding pulse electrical signals.
By counting the number of pulses, we can calculate the angular displacement or linear travel distance. By detecting the pulse frequency, the rotational speed is obtained. Meanwhile, the phase difference between two groups of pulse signals can judge the rotation direction.
Photoelectric encoders feature high accuracy, fast response and strong anti-interference ability, so they are widely used in industrial automation and precision equipment:
Industrial Servo & Motor ControlApplied to servo motors, stepper motors and frequency conversion motors for speed regulation, position feedback and closed-loop control, which ensures stable and accurate motor operation.
Automated Machinery & Production LinesUsed in CNC machine tools, robotic arms, conveyor belts, packaging machinery and printing equipment. It realizes precise positioning, length measurement and synchronous movement of mechanical parts.
Elevator & Hoisting EquipmentInstalled on elevator traction motors to monitor running speed and floor position, supporting stable speed adjustment and accurate floor stopping.
New Energy & TransportationEquipped in electric vehicles, wind power generators and rail transit devices to detect rotating speed and operating status for system safety control.
Precision Testing & InstrumentationUsed in measuring instruments, medical devices and laboratory precision equipment to complete tiny displacement and angle detection.
The photoelectric encoder transforms mechanical rotation and displacement into digital pulses. As the code disc rotates with the target object, light beams are periodically cut off by slits. Photoelectric elements convert the changing light into electrical pulses. The quantity, frequency and phase of pulses reflect position, speed and rotation direction respectively.
It is a key component for motion control, widely adopted in CNC machines, industrial robots, automated production lines, elevators, servo systems, wind power equipment and precision measuring devices to achieve high-precision positioning and speed monitoring.
